Environment a Top Priority

The industrial revolution, while advancing human progress, has left a significant mark on our planet. Industries worldwide have contributed to rising pollution levels, with carbon emissions wreaking havoc on ecosystems, accelerating climate change, and disturbing the natural balance. The impacts of this global carbon footprint are undeniable—forests are shrinking, species are disappearing and the air we breathe is increasingly compromised. But while the challenges are countless, so too are the opportunities for change.

At Bestway Cement, we recognize our responsibility to not only produce essential building materials but to do so sustainably. In our cement manufacturing process, we’ve embraced innovative solutions to reduce our environmental impact, leading the industry in adopting cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices and to comply with applicable national environmental standards and legislations and other requirements. Across all of our production facilities, Bestway has implemented a series of transformative steps that contribute to the reduction of the carbon footprint in the surrounding areas.

Environmental Protection

Bestway leaves no stone unturned when it comes to initiating steps towards environmental conservation and uplift the socio-economic conditions of the local inhabitants. Following are it’s key environmental conservation initiatives:

1. Bestway Head Office, Islamabad is a certified Green Office by WWF – World Wide Fund for Nature – Pakistan since 2017

Bestway Cement ardently supports WWF Pakistan. The Company has been praised and endorsed for its efforts in reducing the carbon footprint while working towards conservation and protection of environment.

As one of the few companies in Pakistan to receive this certification, Bestway has demonstrated its dedication to the preservation of natural resources and reducing its ecological footprint. The certification specifically recognizes Bestway's efforts in conserving Water, Paper, Electricity/Fuel and food.

This prestigious certification is a testament to Bestway's commitment to sustainable practices and environmental conservation.

2. Solar Power Plants

One of our proudest achievements is the installation of solar power plants across all our sites. With a total capacity of 110 MWs, this makes us the largest distributed captive solar power generation setup in the region. By harnessing the power of the sun, we've cut down our reliance on grid electricity by over 30%, directly reducing harmful emissions. Each ray of sunlight captured is a step towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.

3. Waste Heat Recovery Power Plants (WHRPP)

Industries worldwide have long been significant contributors to air pollution, but Bestway Cement is changing that narrative. We were the first in Pakistan to establish Waste Heat Recovery Power Plants. By capturing the heat produced during cement production and converting it into electrical energy, we’ve reduced our reliance on the national grid by more than 25%. Together with our solar power efforts, these technologies have allowed us to cut 5.6 million tons of CO2 annually, the equivalent of planting 9 million trees. This is how we're doing our part in tackling industrial pollution head-on.

4. Air-Cooled Condenser Systems

Water scarcity, one of the most pressing global issues and traditional industrial cooling methods consume vast amounts of this precious resource. At Bestway Cement, we’ve introduced Air-Cooled Condenser Systems to address this challenge. By switching from conventional water-cooled methods, we’ve reduced our water consumption for cooling by an astounding 95%. This innovative solution is a testament to our commitment to water conservation in an increasingly resource-constrained world.

5. Rainwater Harvesting Ponds

Water management is a cornerstone of our environmental efforts. In addition to reducing water consumption, we’ve constructed large rainwater harvesting ponds at our sites. These ponds minimize our dependency on underground water sources, capturing rainwater for a variety of uses—from washing solar panels to irrigating our orchards. In doing so, we’re not only conserving water but also enhancing local ecosystems by creating habitats for regional fish species.

6. Wastewater Treatment Plants

Polluted water is a major contributor to environmental degradation, but at Bestway Cement, we ensure that all our wastewater is treated responsibly. Through our advanced Sequencing Batch Reactor-based wastewater treatment plants, we purify sewage water before it re-enters the environment. This process ensures that we uphold the highest environmental standards and reduce our impact on surrounding water sources.

7. Dust Collection System

Bestway Cement Limited plants are equipped with State of the art dust collection system having combination of Bag Filters and Electrostatic Precipitators. The dust emission remains much below the International Standard of 50 mg/NM3.

EPA teams have been visiting our Plant sites on regular basis to monitor the environmental protection measures and to collect samples. Subsequent test reports revealed the fact that we are operating far below the NEQS.

8. Control of Noise Pollution

Nearly all equipment contributing to high noise levels is enclosed within concrete structures, and individual machines are fitted with silencers to ensure compliance with NEQS. Ground vibrations resulting from drilling and blasting at our raw material quarries remain well within the prescribed limits.

9. Fruit and Olive Orchards

Industrial operations often lead to deforestation, but we’re taking a different approach. At Bestway, we’ve planted extensive fruit orchards across all of our sites—mangoes, olives, oranges and figs thrive in these spaces. Our tree-planting initiatives are about more than just aesthetics; they are part of our broader efforts to restore biodiversity, reduce air pollution and provide long-term environmental benefits.

10. Quarry Rehabilitation

The impact of quarrying on the land can be devastating, but through our quarry rehabilitation program, we are working to reverse that damage. Each monsoon season, we plant indigenous species across our rehabilitated quarries, restoring the land to its natural state. This practice not only preserves local flora but also helps absorb carbon from the atmosphere, making our operations a part of the solution rather than the problem.

11. Self-Assessment Audit

Bestway Cement Limited consistently conducts self-assessments to evaluate the environmental conditions at its plants. Additionally, independent consultant too monitors the environmental initiatives regularly.

Bestway is committed to fighting the environmental challenges of our time. Through innovation, dedication, and responsibility, we’re transforming the way cement is produced—leading the industry in sustainable practices and paving the way for a greener, healthier future.
